As mentioned in our last post, Flexyfoot inventor David Goodwin was lucky enough to go to the Amputee Football World Cup last week.

Here's his comments on the weekend's activities...

The Limerick competition featured the national teams from Ireland, England, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Poland and was held at the University of Limerick, which incidentally features a building on this year’s shortlist for the Sterling Award for Architecture!

The competition took place over two days and the founder of Amputee Football: Don Bennett and the Chairman: Rick Hoffman came over from the US to support the teams. It was really exciting and great to watch the fitness and good ball skills. Talking to players, they all said that after losing their leg – often in an industrial or motor accident, the sport gave them something to live for and dragged them out of depression. The team camaraderie also helped them to feel alive and involved and of course get back to being social – I have to admit the odd pint or two of Guinness was drunk over the weekend!

And the funny thing is that after a couple of minutes of watching the games you no longer think about watching amputees but get involved in a nail-biting, exciting spectator sport with a lot of physical contact which is not all friendly! Surely this has got to become a Paralympic sport soon!!
